This course provides students with the advanced knowledge in principles of classical animation. The student will learn concepts such as squash and stretch, timing, path of action, anticipation, action-reaction, weight, volume, and staging. This course will also develop the student's animation design sense, with exercises in character design. The student will also learn technical skills to produce animation, such as how to flip and draw, and how to film animation using Light boxes & using punch sheets. Skills learned will be applied throughout the Digital Animation Program.

In Animation Basics, you'll go beyond software to learn how to realistically convey weight, motion and follow through critical skills on your journey to become a character animator. You'll start the course by learning how to animate a bouncing ball, and then evolve that bouncing ball through the creation of both vanilla and personality walk cycles.

Students will Learn How to:

  • Understand critical principles of animation like weight and overlapping action

  • Go beyond the bouncing ball by learning to express different weights
  • Understand overlapping action by animating motion and follow through using Squirrels, Monster Ball or Bird Ball

  • Animate a simple and straightforward vanilla walk cycle
  • Create a stylized walk cycle to showcase personality and emotion.

Requirements

  • No academic prerequisites are required for this course, although a passion for drawing is always an advantage. Necessary equipment includes: Pencils, punched animation paper, animation pegbar, basic lightbox and image capture device/software is required.
  • Have a good understanding of the English language.

  • The production process of traditional 2D animation.
  • Overview of equipment required to create 2D animation, traditional and digital.
  • Principles of movement including weight, charting, squash and stretch.
  • How to execute a perfect, pencil-drawn, Bouncing Ball.
  • How to execute a colored, digital bouncing ball in an entertaining vector-based, ToonBoom Studio supported environment.
  • How to animate a perfect hand-drawn,Generic Walk
  • How to animate a rigged, ToonBoom Studio character, walking through a vector-based digital environment.
  • Instruction on drawing techniques for animation.
